The Screamer Down the Hall and Other Tales

Nightmares don’t always stay in your dreams. Sometimes they come to life, follow you, and lurk in the corner and watch you.

Tim Ritter’s The Screamer Down the Hall and Other Tales plunges you into worlds in which the familiar twists into something dark and sinister. A walk in the woods, moving to a new home, and even trying to get a good night’s sleep are all subject to unexpected horrors. Anchored upon the poem “The Screamer Down the Hall”, which was a finalist for The Saturday Visiter Awards at the 2020 International Edgar Allan Poe Festival in Baltimore, Maryland, this collection of stories and poems will pull you down into a dark world, where serial killers, delusional madmen, and even some hidden beasts dwell.

Don’t worry, though. There’s even a little spooky humor included.

So take a long dark walk into The Screamer Down the Hall and Other Tales. And before you go to sleep, be sure to look under the bed…

Sarah Burning

The acrid smoke filled the valley with the smell of burnt home, burnt hopes, burnt dreams, burnt flesh.

On a cold night, in the short span of less than five minutes, the Ritter family crossed a threshold from which there was no return. Peaceful slumber in the early morning hours of October 27th, 1959, quickly became madness and horror.

Cruel blue, orange and yellow flames leapt high into the air casting an eerie glow on three blackened and blistered survivors huddled on the ground under a towering oak. Barely visible, save for the ever-present mist emanating from their nostrils as they panted and shivered, they suffered together in a singular wailing cry.

Nearby, barely conscious, broken and bleeding in the bottom of the overgrown and thorny ravine, lay another blackened and burned survivor. Worst of all, among the horrifying remains of the once-proud simple farmhouse, somewhere beneath the blaze and collapsed beams, lay two burning bodies, their screams at last silenced.

How do you continue with life when you’ve lost everything? How do face each day when you know it means more pain from the burns? How do you get past the guilt, knowing you lived, and others died? How do you silence the echo in your head; the sound of him screaming your name as he burned alive?

After more than 60 years, the story of the survivors is ready to be told…

You’re invited to learn the history of this real-life tragedy, within the pages of the award-winning Sarah Burning.

Sarah and Orville

When Sarah Burning was released in 2021, readers fell in love with Sarah Ritter and her family. The struggles, setbacks, and ultimate victories of the three survivors of The Fire made people want to know more about the family. Readers especially requested additional information about Orville, Sarah’s husband who died within a few days after The Fire. He was severely burned, but his demise stemmed ultimately from the smoke inhaled when he lingered too long in the burning house before jumping from the second story window.

Indeed, Orville and the people from whom he came were the topic of hours of conversations and interviews during the author’s research for Sarah Burning. Unable to fit all that information into the original book, author Tim Ritter now takes the reader into a deep look into Orville, the stories about him, and tales of his ancestors, along with many old family photographs. Additionally, more backstory about Sarah and her parents is included, as well as an in-depth examination of six letters that she wrote to her twin sons during the spring and summer of 1959, just months before The Fire. Those letters paint a vivid portrait of Orville and Sarah’s lives on their own in the old farmhouse after all their children moved on.

Lastly, stunning film footage from 1959 was discovered during the writing of Sarah and Orville, and stills from that footage, which relate directly to The Fire, are examined. See why this footage matters, and why oldest son Norman Ritter, grieving silently after The Fire, wanted it destroyed.

It’s time to take a deeper look into Sarah and Orville.
